Carbon Filter, Softener, or RO? Which Water Treatment Does Your Home Actually Need?

There's no one-size-fits-all water solution. We explain what each system removes, who it's right for, and typical Phoenix pricing.

Walk into any home improvement store and the water filtration section is overwhelming. Carbon filters, softeners, RO systems, UV purifiers — each solves a different problem. Here's how to choose.

**Carbon/Activated Carbon Filters** remove chlorine, chloramines, VOCs, and organic compounds that affect taste and odor. Phoenix water is heavily chlorinated, so carbon filtration makes a noticeable difference in drinking water flavor. Cost: $500–$1,500 installed for whole-home.

**Water Softeners** use ion exchange to remove calcium and magnesium — the hardness minerals. They don't filter contaminants or improve taste. But for Phoenix's 25+ gpg water, a softener extends appliance life, prevents scale, and makes soap and detergents work better. Cost: $1,200–$3,000 installed.

**Reverse Osmosis (RO) Systems** force water through a semi-permeable membrane, removing up to 99% of dissolved solids including lead, arsenic, nitrates, fluoride, and pharmaceuticals. They produce the purest drinking water available. Most Phoenix homes install RO under the kitchen sink. Cost: $400–$800 installed.

The ideal Phoenix combination: Many of our customers do all three — a softener for the whole home (protecting pipes and appliances), a carbon pre-filter (removing chlorine before it enters the softener), and an RO system under the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking. Total cost: $2,000–$4,500 installed.
